MRI-Compatible Absolute Rotary Encoder
Micronor has introduced the world’s first commercially available, MRI-compatible fiber optic
absolute rotary encoder system. The all-optical,
non-metallic MR338 passive sensor provides
precision absolute angular measurement from 0°
to 360° with 13-bit (8192 count) resolution and
12-bit multi-turn tracking. A duplex multimode
fiber optic link connects the passive MR338
Sensor to the active MR330 Controller Module
installed outside the MRI area. This absolute
encoder system is designed for use in function-al-MRI research, MRI training phantoms, EMC test
facilities and other challenging electromagnetic
environments where EMF and RF transparency
is required. The Micronor MR330 series absolute
encoder system uses a novel optical technique.
The controller transmits a burst of light to the
code disk in the sensor, which accurately modulates the spectral components of the light based
on angular position.

Unveiled at MD&M
Through significant investments in research and
development, OMAX Corporation has made great
strides in micro-abrasive waterjet technology,
targeting manufacturers that produce parts or part
features smaller than 300 microns. The company
will spotlight some of its recent micromachining
achievements in booth 1509 at MD&M Chicago,
taking place Sept. 10 – 12 at the McCormick
Place. Ideal for the medical industry, the high precision 7/15 Mini MAXJET5i nozzle is one example
of how OMAX is at the forefront of micro-abrasive
waterjet technology. The nozzle accurately cuts
delicate, complex patterns in parts made from virtually any type of material, such as the machining
of a titanium-based orthopedic surgical implant
for human bone repair. The 7/15 Mini MAXJET5
features a 0.007” orifice and 0.015” mixing tube
combination, forming an extremely fine jet stream
that can produce a kerf as small as 0.015”.

World’s Smallest Autofocus
Machine Vision Camera
IDS Imaging Development Systems announced
that it is shipping its new uEye XS, the world’s
smallest machine vision camera with autofocus.
Measuring a compact 23 x 26. 5 x 21. 5 mm (. 9”
x 1.04” x .84”), the uEye XS is amazingly simple
to integrate into virtually any imaging system,
ranging from interactive kiosks and embedded
systems using the Raspberry Pi, to traditional applications in medical technology, industrial quality
control, microscopy, and access control. Thanks
to the integrated autofocus optical system, the
uEye XS delivers a crisp image from distances
of just 10 cm, either automatically or manually
using software. The associated API function also
enables the current focus position to be read.
Digital zoom allows easy and almost continuous
enlargement of smaller sections of the image.

Vishay Intertechnology has introduced a new series of TANTAMOUNT surface-mount solid tantalum molded chip
capacitors designed to provide improved performance and reliability in a wide variety of non-life-support medical
monitoring and diagnostic instruments for in-home and hospital use. Featuring a robust anode design, the TM3
series is 100 surge current tested (B, C, D, and E case sizes) and available with Weibull grading and Hi-Rel
screening options. Vishay manufactures the new TM3 series at its Dimona, Israel, manufacturing facility. In addition to being ISO9001-certified, the Dimona plant was recently certified to ISO13485 standards, which outline
medical device regulatory requirements for quality management systems and facilitate the requirements needed
for medical device regulatory compliance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
